New Print Suggestions section

It’s said that a picture is worth a thousand words. But not all pictures are what you want hanging on your wall. So for anyone looking for just the right mountain print, I’ve added a new section to help. In four print categories, Print Suggestions presents a selection from all the images in occasionalclimber.co.nz that I think are best suited to printing for display purposes.

Mountain landscapes are probably the most universally popular print category. These images feature no people, focusing simply on the beauty and grandeur of the natural mountain landscape.
But introducing a human element to an image can make it much more personal. You can more easily imagine yourself right there in the landscape. A human element also gives a sense of scale to the landscape.
Mountain culture takes the human element a step further, focusing on people and what they do in the mountains. What remains apparent is how significantly the mountain environment influences and shapes the people who live or visit there.
Within mountain landscapes are countless natural wonders – flora, fauna and beautiful ice, snow, water, rock and cloud features.

Site content now spans 27 years

I’m happy to advise that occasionalclimber.co.nz now features the best of my alpine photography from the past 27 years. Over 4,000 images, but don’t be discouraged by that huge number – you can easily target right in on your particular area of interest using the cascading links in See Images. New captioned slideshows with supporting topo trip maps are being added most months. The latest are:

Mount Peel in the Kahurangi National Park March 2016

A traverse of seven of the Tararua’s highest points February 2016

A challenging two ridge trip into the Tararuas February 2016

Climbs of two peaks in the Khumbu region of Nepal December 2015

A growing number of published outdoor magazine articles are also featured.

New mountain website – Occasionalclimber.co.nz goes live

I’m excited to announce that occasionalclimber.co.nz is ready for visitors – just! I have a long way to go before I get the images bound for the site up to date, but I’ve made a start and will add more as quickly as time permits. In the meantime, there are some nice panoramas to view at HOME. Occasional Climber – the book is available for purchase while stocks last; and I’ve just released a fresh new 2015 calendar, also available to order now – perhaps a nice Christmas gift.

This site brings together and breaths life into over 25 years of travelling, hiking and climbing experiences, in both pictures and words. I’ve hugely enjoyed making and capturing these journeys. I hope I can pass some of that on to the visitors to this site.
