Occasional Climber

The Devil’s Thumb, March 2026

Our start point on the Wangapeka River Road, beside a small stream at 270m
Having climbed about 400m up untracked scrub and gorse it was a case of 'you had to laugh'
At 800m the spur led from regenerating bush to more established forest
Occasional views through the bush on the narrow ridge top were some reward for a hot relentless bush bash
The three peaks of Mt Patriarch stood out to our west
At 1,000m is a saddle in the main ridge which is the best point to sidle up to rather than gain the ridge south of it as we did. The overgrown karst does not make for pleasant travel
Beyond the saddle the ridge climbs eastward up more overgrown karst. Better views can be enjoyed, now to Mt Owen and the other peaks to the southwest, this one from Pt1118, where we decided after 4 hours of miserable progress to call it a day. The remaining ground to the 1,206m summit was more broken, overgrown karst with no summit view to be had
